The cheatsheet

Every ear piercing, side by side

Ordered by pain level — gentlest first.

  • Auricle

The outer edge between your helix and your earlobe

Pain level Thin cartilage — a quick, sharp pinch
    Healing time 3–9 months
    Full guide — Auricle
  • Helix

Anywhere along the upper cartilage rim

Pain level Firmer than a lobe, but thin
    Healing time Within 6 months
    Full guide — Helix
  • Tragus

The flap of cartilage covering your ear canal

Pain level Thin, flexible cartilage with few nerve endings
    Healing time 6–12 months
    Full guide — Tragus
  • Forward helix

The small rim of cartilage at the top front of the ear

Pain level A small, tight spot for the piercer to work in
    Healing time 3–6 months
    Full guide — Forward helix
  • Daith

The innermost fold of cartilage, just above the ear canal

Pain level A sharp shot — takes 6–9 seconds to pierce
    Healing time 6–12 months
    Full guide — Daith
  • Conch

The inner bowl of the ear — inner or outer

Pain level Thick, hard cartilage — deep pressure
    Healing time 6–12 months
    Full guide — Conch
  • Anti-tragus

The vertical ridge above the earlobe, opposite the tragus

Pain level Dense cartilage on an awkward angle
    Healing time 6–12 months
    Full guide — Anti-tragus
  • Rook

The cartilage ridge above the tragus, between outer and inner ear

Pain level A thick fold — more tissue than anywhere else here
    Healing time 6–18 months
    Full guide — Rook

Pain is subjective and these numbers are a consensus of piercing studios and published guides, not a measurement — treat them as a starting point. For scale, a lobe piercing sits at about 2, and the two that top the chart, the snug and the industrial, run 8–9 but aren't covered here. Cartilage heals slower than lobes, and healing times vary a lot from person to person.
